Access to Iowa Great Lakes
The Iowa Great Lakes are located in the northwest corner of Iowa, about 45 minutes from Emmetsburg. The Great Lakes are comprised of 5 interconnected lakes: West Okoboji, East Okoboji, Upper Gar, Lower Gar and Minnewashta; and beautiful Spirit Lake, which is Iowa’s largest natural lake.
This summer playground provides recreational water activities of every kind—boating, skiing, sailing, swimming, fishing, winter skating. The land-based recreational activities include 14 miles of trails for biking, walking, jogging, enjoying nature; golf courses, amusement parks, mini-golf, go-cart, tennis, etc. There are numerous public parks for additional outdoor activities.
On the cultural side, there is the summer playhouse, numerous movie theaters, art galleries and live musical entertainment. Shopping runs the gamut from posh to practical. Restaurants provide a sampling of every style of eating to tempt every taste.
The famous University of Okoboji Winter Games is the centerpiece of activities during the winter months. Skiing, snowmobiling and hunting keep visitors active.
