Lake Restoration Project
In
1989, after a five-year drought, Five Island Lake was especially shallow.
Its average depth of 4 to 6 feet had decreased to 2 to 3 feet in the lower
part of the lake, and the upper 900 acres was mostly dried up. The water
quality was extremely poor; on windy days it was muddy, followed by periods
of algal bloom. The lake became useless for recreational activities.
A group of concerned citizens, later appointed by the
City Council and designated as the Five Island Lake Restoration Board,
decided to undertake the job of rehabilitating this body of water –
to deepen it and improve its water qualify.
