Art & Audrey Smith Wellness Center
SWC Partnership
The Smith Wellness Center became a reality
in 1997 because of a unique partnership between the City of Emmetsburg, Iowa Lakes Community College, and the citizens
of Palo Alto County.
At the time of initial discussions in 1996, Iowa Lakes
had some needs for recreation, classroom, and library areas; the City
was planning a new pool; and it needed a new library. Thus, a partnership
was created. The practical aspects came into play by eliminating the duplication
of resources, cutting costs, sharing expenses, and providing more services.
It was a win-win situation for the community.
Iowa Lakes committed $2 million to the
$4.3 million project. Then the Smith Foundation provided
the lead gift of $500,000 to jumpstart the community campaign. The purpose of the Smith Foundation is to use the earnings of the foundation to enhance
worthwhile community projects, of which the Wellness Center was one. Others
became involved. The City of Emmetsburg, Municipal
Utilities, and the Public Library all contributed.
The Mayor, City Council, City Administrators, the College President and
Trustees, and dedicated citizens provided time and energy to make this
happen. The Community Campaign started the outpouring from the general
public, all of whom were willing to provide dollars in order
to make this a reality. The goal of $2.3 million in pledges was reached
and the Wellness Center and Library became a reality.
In 2000, local physician, Dr. Gerald Wieneke left the Wellness Center $1,000,000 upon his death to promote the health
and well-being of the community. This generous gift has given the Wellness
Center the means to provide facilities, equipment, programs, as well as
maintenance and upkeep for the facility.
When the Smith Wellness Center and Library complex was
built in 1997 Emmetsburg City Library and the Iowa
Lakes Community College Library combined into one facility, but
maintained separate areas for their own specific needs, resulting in a
unique relationship.
Through the years, the benefits of the partnership have
been visible. The library is open longer hours, more resources and programming
is provided, the computer lab is widely used, the Convention Center brings
in large groups, a senior citizens meeting room has been incorporated,
numerous activities for youth and adults are offered, and a variety of
educational programs are available.
This has been a unique and successful partnership that
benefits the entire area.
