Iowa Lakes Community College
Traditional & Alternative Class Formats
Iowa Lakes offers traditional face-to-face
classes on all campuses. In addition, the College also offers a number
of alternative class formats, including interactive distance
learning formats that make it easier for students to enroll in classes
in different time frames. These formats are very popular
with working students who cannot attend classes during the traditional
class times. They include
Traditional
face-to-face classes
Iowa Lakes offers hundreds of traditional face-to-face courses each semester. These courses, their locations, and
type are published each semester in the Course Schedule book.
Online Internet Courses
Now you can take college credit courses over the Internet!
As part of a consortium of seven Iowa community colleges, Iowa Lakes offers
numerous courses that can lead to Associate Degrees over the World Wide
Web. This is a cooperative degree program known as the Iowa Community
College Online Consortium (ICCOC).
ITFS Local TV System
For
many years Iowa Lakes has operated its own ITFS or "television
system" to provide classes at each of its campuses as well
as to some local high schools. Classes are broadcast from one campus
location to each of the other campus locations via the television system.
With cameras and microphones in all the classrooms, the student has an
interactive one-on-one contact with the instructor, just as in a face-to-face
class. Iowa Lakes offers an average of 30 live interactive courses to
approximately 700 students per semester over four channels.
Iowa Communications Network (ICN)
Since
1993, Iowa Lakes has also delivered courses via the Iowa Communications
Network (ICN). The ICN is a statewide fiber optic communications
system that provides interactive video, voice, and data services. Students
in these classes can see and hear the instructor and students at the other
sites by using microphones and cameras. There are approximately 700 instructional
television classrooms in school districts, colleges, universities, AEAs,
public libraries, governmental agencies, and other locations throughout
the state of Iowa. The ICN also connects these classrooms by satellite
to the rest of the world.
Iowa Public Television (IPTV) and College by Cassette
Another distant learning option includes the Telecourses,
which permit students to take credit courses by viewing the courses over
IPT or by cassette. The lecture portion of the telecourse is either broadcast
over Iowa Public Television, or College by Cassette courses are covered with videos that are checked out through the campus
libraries. Each course has a faculty member facilitator who provides instruction
and guidance for the student throughout the semester.
Bachelor’s Degree Completion (2 + 2)
Iowa Lakes has partnered with several four-year college
institutions to provide the last two years of a Bachelor’s
Degree to area students. This is called the 2 + 2 program.
Iowa Lakes provides the first two years of course work. These colleges
provide their upper-level courses, usually on the Iowa Lakes campuses: Briar Cliff University from Sioux City, Buena
Vista University from Storm Lake, and University of Iowa,
College of Nursing. This provides an opportunity for students
to complete their Bachelor’s degree without having to go to another
campus.
